John was born on May 3, 1935 and passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017.
John was a resident of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania at the time of passing.
Mr. Eier was a graduate of Nevada High School, Nevada, OH with the class of 1953.
He served in the United States Army for two years and was honorably discharged July 31, 1961.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 19, 2017 in Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church Street, Waynesboro, PA with Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Mr. John R. Eier, 82, of Marshview Drive, Waynesboro, PA passed away Wednesday, August, 9, 2017 in the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA. Born May 3, 1935 in Nevada, Ohio, he was the son of the late Alfred and Ariel (Sausser) Eier. Mr. Eier was a graduate of Nevada High School, Nevada, OH.

WAYNESBORO, Pa — Mr. John R. Eier, 82, of Marshview Drive, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, passed away Wednesday, Aug., 9, 2017 at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 at Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends on hour prior to the service Saturday morning at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Missions Fund at Christ United Methodist Church, 100 S. Church St., Waynesboro PA 17268.
Arrangements are by Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Marion man arrested after being chased by deputies
A Marion man was arrested Saturday afternoon following a foot chase into a flooded field. The sheriff’s report states deputies responded to a complaint about a suspicious male who was later identified as Christopher M. Klaiber, Marion, walking into buildings on the 8600 block of TH 104 in Salem Township.

Significant upgrades were made to the retirement facility over the last three and a half years thanks in part to $1.7 million dollars raised by 423 donors over a seven-year period of fundraising and Fairhaven proudly showed them off with guided tours.

The fearsome north wall of the Eiger which rears above the Swiss resort of Grindelwald has one of the most daunting reputations in the climbing world and many a drama has been played out on its face.
The 13,000ft-high Eiger, German for Ogre, is steep, exposed to bad weather, almost constantly in shadow even in summer, presents alternating bands of difficult rock and ice, and is notoriously loose.
Anyone brave enough to attempt the 6,000ft wall - the Nordwand - has to risk a fusillade of falling rocks. To avoid this particularly lethal danger some choose to climb the face in the coldest conditions when the rocks are more likely to be fozen in place.
Many of the big walls of the European Alps were scaled in the years following climbing's golden era of the 19th Century but the north face of the Eiger remained unclimbed until 1938 when a team of four managed to succeed where many had died trying.
The first to get really high on the face were Max Sedlmayer and Karl Mehringer who in 1935 were halted by bad weather. Their bodies were spotted weeks later.
The following year saw one of the most traumatic episodes in the Eiger's history.

Four young climbers - Andreas Hinterstoisser, Edi Ranier, Willy Angerer and Toni Kurz - made a renewed attempt on the north wall.
Hinterstoisser opened up a route to the summit with a brilliant traverse but it could not be reversed without a rope in place.
After being caught up in a huge storm they were unable to retreat the way they had come and all four were killed. Toni Kurz perished hanging from his abseil rope only feet from a rescue team.
The would-be rescuers tried to reach the stricken climber from a window which emerges onto the face from the railway tunnel running right through the mountain.
But a knot prevented him sliding any further towards the outstretched arms and his own fingers were so badly frozen he could not free himself. The rescuers had to withdraw for the night despite the stricken climber's pleas not to be left alone.
When they returned the next morning he was much weaker and with the words "Ich kann nicht mehr" (I cannot go on) he died almost within reach of safety.
After more failed and fatal attempts to climb the mountain by its most difficult face, a group of four finally managed to put up a route.
Two Germans, Anderl Heckmair and Ludwig (Wiggerl) Vorg, and the Austrians Fritz Kasparek and Heinrich Harrer, joined forces in 1938 to make the first ascent. The dramatic tale was recounted in Harrer's book The White Spider which is named after the distinctive ice field near the summit and has become a mountaineering classic.
The climbers were paraded by Adolf Hitler in a propaganda exercise. Harrer later spoke of his discomfort about the chapter and Vorg was killed on the Russian front only a few years later.
Chris Bonington was again involved with another Eiger epic in 1966 when a new, more direct route was being tried - in winter.
Using big expedition tactics of installing fixed ropes as they climbed, thereby allowing the mountaineers to descend and then quickly regain their previous high point, more than a dozen climbers forced the route with this so-called siege technique.
But tragedy struck yet again as the team neared its goal. American climber and driving force behind the direct route, John Harlin, fell 5,000ft after one of the fixed ropes snapped.
The climb which was named after him was not repeated until nearly four years later when it took almost three months of endeavour to make the second ascent by the Harlin Direct route.
Despite its grim history the world's greatest climbers have continued to test themselves on the north wall of the Eiger.
Reinhold Messner - probably regarded as the most successful mountaineer ever, having scaled all 14 of the world's 8,000-metre peaks - climbed the classic route at breathtaking speed and made the first ascent of the Eiger's north pillar.
The face which earned it the nickname Death Wall continues to live up to its reputation and those who want to enjoy the mountain without the enornmous risks involved in stepping on to the Eiger's northern aspect are best advised to view it from the valley bottom or from the mountain railway.

John Anthony Biddiscombe Eier
John Anthony Biddiscombe Eier, 66, peacefully passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, in Walla Walla, after a long illness. He was born in Lewiston on July 2, 1950, to Frank A. Biddiscombe and Anna Marie Whitehead.
He attended first through eighth grades at St. Stanislaus Catholic School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1968. He was an Eagle Scout. He joined the U.S. Army in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1971. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
John married Lyla Crawford in 1977 and they later divorced. They had two girls, Theresa and Renee. John also helped raise Lyla's third daughter, Kameryne. In later years, he was the beloved partner in life with Jackie Bremer of Dayton.
He resided in Dayton for many years. He belonged to the Eagles Lodge and also was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He is survived by his mother, Anna Marie Whitehead Biddiscombe Eier of Lewiston; daughters Theresa Eier and husband Bryan Martin of Dayton, Renee Eier and partner Joe Nunan of Walla Walla, and Kameryne Snow and partner Roberto Contreras of Dayton; and six grandchildren. He also is survived by sisters Jeanette (Larry) Wolf of Boise, Joan Musseid Frank of Lewiston and Cookie (Rick) Crane of Lewiston; brothers Doug D. Eier of Pomeroy, Bob (Kathy) Eier of Chelan, Tom (Sue) Eier of Lewiston and Steve (Kris) Biddiscombe of Clarkston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his fathers, Frank A. Biddiscombe and Douglas S. Eier, and sister Janet Eier Reagan.
A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Root of Holy Family Catholic Church. A celebration of his life will follow at the Elks Lodge in Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, John requested donations be made to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dayton.

Why are Kinder Surprise eggs illegal in the US?
I actually used Kinder Surprise eggs as a case study in a masters paper. To answer the legal question, the 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act is the law most cited to justify the embargo on Kinder Eggs. Because a toy is kept inside a confection, Kinder eggs are embargoed from point of entry into the US.
As someone who has given Ferrero Kinder eggs to my children while living in Europe, I can state that for a child over the age of three, these eggs are perfectly safe. The capsule holding the toy is too large for a small child to swallow, and is almost impossible for adults, let alone children, to open easily. Plus there are plenty of warnings on the foil packaging advising parents not to give the confection to children under the age of three.
While conducting research on this paper, I discovered that Mars actively lobbied the US government to have confections with interior toys banned any time a similar product comes on the market. For instance, in 1997, when Nestlé tried to introduce (the similar) Magic chocolate balls in the US, Mars was instrumental in promoting civil action to prevent the marketing of this product.
And believe me, getting caught trying to 'smuggle' Kinder eggs into the US is not much fun. We had friends travelling into the US from Canada who packed 10 Kinder eggs in their luggage for their children (all over the age of five) for Easter. Customs and Border Protection not only confiscated the Kinder eggs, but also fined the family $1,200 [£787] per egg, or $12,000 [£7,870] total. So, don't try this, unless you're willing to pay a hefty price.
As already written, US regulation does not allow placing a 'non-food' object inside food, but only if it is not visible from the outside.
But there is a similar product available that copies the Kinder Surprise egg but dodges the US regulation: the capsule containing the surprise is partially visible between the two chocolate halves.
If security is the goal we want to reach we should start considering banning hot dogs, salted peanuts and all the foods (many of which are man-made) that cause hundreds of choking deaths worldwide.
On the other hand, the Kinder egg caused three fatalities in 40 years according to Wikipedia, which is a pretty low chance of injury considering the billions of Kinder eggs which have been sold around the world.
