Terms & Conditions
Fabergé Terms and Conditions of Sale
These Terms and Conditions apply to all sales made on our web site or in our company stores (currently in London, New York and Geneva). Unless we tell you otherwise, they do not apply to any purchases you make from Authorised Fabergé Retailers or other outlets - those retailers will have their own terms and conditions of sale.
The particular Fabergé entity you contract with to sell your purchase to you varies depending on how and where you purchase your items. In all instances, we will refer to this party as “Fabergé”, or “us” or “we” etc in this agreement.
If you purchase your items ONLINE or at our LONDON store, the seller is Fabergé (UK) Limited, whose registered office is 23 King Street, London SW1Y 6QY.
If you purchase your items from our GENEVA store, the seller is Fabergé Suisse S.A., whose registered address is Grand Hotel Kempinski Arcades, Quai du Mont-Blanc 19, 1201 Genève, Switzerland.
If you purchase your items from our NEW YORK store, the seller is Fabergé Inc, whose registered address is 2711 Centreville Road, Suite 400, Wilmington 19808, Delaware, USA.
In general, to contact us, you should do so at sales@faberge.com
2 Eligibility and Personal Details
By placing an order with us you must be legally capable of entering into a contract with us. This normally includes being at least 18 years of age.
You confirm that the information you provide about yourself is true, accurate and complete and that you are the person referred to in the billing information. If any information changes, you should advise us straight away.
For online sales, you promise to keep your login details secure and not give them to anybody else. You must notify us immediately if you think there has been a breach of security or unauthorised use of your account.
We do not guarantee that you will be able to make online purchases in all countries, or that we will accept all payment cards.
By making an offer (asking) to purchase merchandise from us you authorise us to carry out credit checks, to transmit or obtain information about you to or from third parties in any jurisdiction, to authenticate your identity, and to process your personal information to complete the transaction. See our Privacy Policy for how we may use your personal information.
3 How the Contract for Sale is Formed
ALL OFFERS TO BUY OR SELL MERCHANDISE ARE CONDITIONAL ON THE MERCHANDISE BEING AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT THE TIME OF INTENDED DELIVERY.
If you are purchasing IN-STORE, the contract to purchase is formed when you agree with our sales assistant to purchase a particular item, even if you don’t pay for it right then. Simply asking to see an item that is not in stock does not create a contract to buy it. Paying a deposit would be taken as evidence of a contract to buy the item. If you subsequently change your mind, depending on applicable law and subject to our cancellation and returns policy, we do not have to refund your deposit or purchase price.
If you ask us to make a personalised item or some other item especially for you then our agreement to make it and part payment by you will create the contract. From that point on you will be liable for the full contract price. We do not accept cancellations or returns on personalised items or items made especially for you.
For ONLINE contracts, your order constitutes an offer to Fabergé that you will buy the merchandise. All orders are subject to acceptance by us. Our online sales procedure is intended to make available for sale only those items we have in stock and items for delivery to countries in the drop down menu. If there is any discrepancy between the sales procedure and these terms and conditions of sale, these terms and conditions take precedence. Not all items advertised on our web site are available for sale online. Items in your shopping basket are not necessarily secure and may be purchased by other customers. We will confirm receipt of your order (Order Confirmation Receipt) but the contract will not be formed until we have checked availability and actually despatched the order to you. We will send you a Despatch Confirmation when the order has been despatched to you. The Despatch Confirmation serves to confirm that the contract has been formed and also advises you of the delivery details.
If you do not receive an Order Confirmation Receipt within 5 hours of placing your order, or you do not receive a Despatch Confirmation within 5 days of placing your order, you should contact our online sales staff at sales@faberge.com.
Ownership of any items you have agreed to buy from us will pass to you at the latter of the time you take delivery of the items or the time you pay for them in full. We do not normally give customers items “on approval” or allow them to take possession of merchandise before it is paid for in full. On the rare occasion that we might allow customers to take possession of goods before they are paid for, the customer will be fully responsible for the merchandise after they have taken possession of it, and if it is lost or damaged, the customer will have to pay for it.
4 Price, Taxes, Payment and Delivery
For IN-STORE purchases, the price you actually pay will include any taxes applicable in that jurisdiction. However, in some countries, for example the USA, the displayed or advertised price may not include sales tax which will be added at the time of purchase. You may be entitled to refunds from Customs when leaving a jurisdiction where you bought an item if you are permanently exporting the item. You may also be liable for customs duty or tax for items imported into another jurisdiction. If you are exporting an item you should check the tax implications with the authorities in the country of your intended destination.
For ONLINE purchases, the prices displayed on our website for online sales depend on the country the goods will be delivered to, and for the countries in the drop down menu, the quoted price is the “delivered price” (i.e. includes taxes, insurance, shipping). If you want delivery to a country not on the drop down menu, please contact sales@faberge.com. For deliveries to New York State, NY State Sales Tax will be added to the “delivered price”.
We try to ensure that all our advertised prices are accurate, but errors may sometimes occur. If we discover an error in the price of an advertised item or an item you have ordered, we will contact you as soon as possible. You will have an option to reconfirm your order at the correct price or to cancel it.
You may pay for your merchandise by credit card, debit card or bank transfer. If you are buying in-store you may be able to pay with cash but local stores will have to comply with local money laundering and other legislation which may restrict the amount of cash we are allowed to accept. All debit and credit card holders are subject to validation checks and if the issuer of your card refuses to authorise payment, we will not be liable for any delay or non-delivery.
For online sales we will arrange for delivery to the delivery address but we and our agents reserve the right to delay or decline delivery to any address for security or other reasons. If delivery cannot be made at your chosen address, we will ask you to provide an alternative address.
We take reasonable care to keep details of your order and payment secure but third parties are necessarily involved in processing your card information. In the absence of negligence by Fabergé, we will not be liable for any loss you suffer for unauthorised access to any data you provide us when ordering from our web site or in-store.
If you buy ONLINE, many jurisdictions give you the right to cancel your order and return items for a short period after you have received them. In the European Union this period is 14 days. Where you bought online, we will honour any such period which is effective in the jurisdiction we delivered your merchandise to. In order to cancel your online order under applicable law, you must write to us at our London address or email us at sales@faberge.com, using the subject heading “Cancellation of Sale in Cooling Off Period.” If you cancel under applicable law (where it is available) we will give you a full refund. You must return the full order to us at our London address at your cost, you must arrange for its insurance at the price you paid for it, and the items must be returned unused and in their original condition and with original packaging and certificates. Except where otherwise required by applicable law, we will not accept items returned if they are used or damaged or returned without their original packaging, or if the sale was not an online sale or if the item was specially made or personalised for you.
In some jurisdictions you may be entitled to cancel online orders if they are not delivered to you within a defined or reasonable time from placing your order, and you have not agreed to a specific delivery date. In the European Union, the defined period is 30 days (unless you have agreed something else with us). We will try to get your order to you as soon as possible and we will honour any law applicable in the jurisdiction the merchandise is intended to be delivered to, that gives you the right to cancel for delayed delivery. If you wish to cancel under this law you should write to us at our London address or email us at sales@faberge.com using the heading “Cancellation of Sale for Non Delivery.” If you cancel under this law (where it is available) we will give you a full refund.
In addition to the legal rights provided in some jurisdictions to cancel your contract for sale (as above), we also offer all customers, both online and in-store, the opportunity to return unwanted items to us for store credit or exchange within 30 days of delivery of the items. The items must be returned within 30 days to the store where you purchased them, or to our London address if you purchased online, and they must be returned unused and in their original condition, with original packaging and certificates. We will exchange or give you a store credit note for returned items (at your option) to the price you paid for the item subject to any special conditions of sale. Items that have been specially made for you and personalised items cannot be returned under this policy. You must use the credit note at the same store (or online) you purchased the item from and you must use it within 12 months of the original purchase. We cannot give a cash refund for any part of your store credit but you can use it to purchase any available items. We will normally refund tax and duty on the item too, but we cannot do this for items purchased on the web site and you will have to take responsibility yourself for claiming refunds if they are available in your jurisdiction. You must arrange and pay for all insurance, post and packaging costs if you return goods under this policy.
Where appropriate we will resize rings, free of charge within 90 days of purchase, but resizing will not always be possible. We will treat your request sympathetically, but we reserve the right to offer this service completely at our discretion.
We offer a lifetime warranty to our customers against manufacturing defects in all jewellery and objets we sell. For watches, the warranty is for three years from the date of purchase. This means that if a manufacturing defect becomes apparent during the guarantee period in any of those items we sell you, we will fix the defect (where reasonably possible) at no cost to you. If we cannot fix the manufacturing defect at a reasonable cost we will discuss some other form of compensation with you. This warranty covers gifts you buy for others and give to them within one year of purchase, but it does not extend to any other disposition of the product. Of course, you must take good care of the product, comply with any care recommendations we suggest and if the item requires servicing, then it must be serviced regularly. You must be able to provide proof that you bought the item from us.
You should always ensure you have insurance to cover loss of stones or other accidental loss or damage to any item. We will not be liable for loss of or damage to stones under this warranty, or for any indirect loss you suffer due to a manufacturing defect in any item you have purchased from us.
This warranty does not affect any legal rights you may have if you have been supplied with faulty goods.
If your item is damaged in an accident or by normal wear and tear, please contact our sales team at sales@faberge.com and we will try to provide a quote for repair where possible.
We may change these terms and conditions at any time but once you have purchased an item, the terms and conditions current at the time of your purchase will apply.
If any of these terms and conditions is invalid or unenforceable, the remainder will continue to have full force and effect.
These terms and conditions will not be binding on our assignees or successors unless they adopt these terms and conditions or they are affiliated with Fabergé.
If we breach these terms and conditions we will be liable only for your direct losses and the reasonably foreseeable consequences of our breach.
Our liability is limited to the price you paid for the goods purchased from us.
We will not be responsible to you for any delay or failure to comply with our obligations if the delay or failure arises from any cause beyond our reasonable control.
We do not seek to limit our liability for death or personal injury arising from our negligence, or to exclude liability for fraudulent misrepresentation by ourselves or our agents.
Orders placed in the U.S. are subject to the law of the State of New York, excluding principles of conflicts of law, and all disputes regarding deliveries to U.S. addresses shall be resolved in the courts located in New York, New York.

Cookie Policy
A new law on cookies demands that you, as a website user, are given the opportunity to understand how cookies are used on our websites and consent to cookies being stored on your computer (laptop/mobile/tablet).
A cookie is a small text file, typically of letters and numbers, downloaded to your computer when you access websites. Typically, they contain the following information: a site name and unique user ID, the duration of the cookie's abilities and effects, and a random number. As a rule, cookies cannot be used to reveal your identity or personally identifying information.
When you visit a website that uses cookies for the first time, a cookie is downloaded onto your computer. The next time you visit that website, your computer checks to see if it has a cookie that is relevant and sends the information contained in that cookie back to the website. The website then notes that you have been there before, and in some cases, tailors what pops up on screen to take account of that fact. They also might record how long you spend on each page on a site, what links you click, even your preferences for page layouts and colour schemes.
Generally, the role of cookies is beneficial, making your interaction with frequently-visited sites smoother with no extra effort on your part. Without cookies, online shopping would be much harder. Without cookies, some websites will become less interactive with the cookie option turned off.
These cookies expire when you close your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome). These cookies are used for various reasons, for example, remembering what you have put in your shopping basket as you browse a website. They can also be used for security to access your Internet banking or email.
These cookies are still stored on your computer after you have closed your web browser which allows your preferences on websites to be remembered. These cookies are used for a variety of purposes, for example, remembering your preferences on a website (your language choice or your user name on a particular website).
This refers to the website placing the cookie. First party cookies are cookies set by the website you are visiting. Third party cookies are set by another website; the website you are visiting may have advertising on the page and this other website will be able to set a cookie on your computer. Third party cookies on the main web browsers allow third party cookies by default. Changing the settings on your browsers can prevent this.
There are some exemptions to the above where it is essential for a website to store information on your computer, for example, to provide a service to you that you have requested.
- We use cookies to improve your experience on our websites and for functionality purposes, for example, if you choose to buy any of our products, we place a cookie on your computer to remember the currency that you have selected so next time you visit our website we can display the correct currency to you;
- We also use cookies to understand your usage of our website;
- Most web browsers (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.) are configured to automatically accept cookies. However, most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings, including the disabling of cookies at any time, etc.

Items that have been specially made for you and personalised items cannot be returned under this policy. You must use the credit note at the same store (or online) you purchased the item from and you must use it within 12 months of the original purchase. We cannot give a cash refund for any part of your store credit but you can use it to purchase any available items.
- We use cookies to improve your experience on our websites and for functionality purposes, for example, if you choose to buy any of our products, we place a cookie on your computer to remember the currency that you have selected so next time you visit our website we can display the correct currency to you;
- We also use cookies to understand your usage of our website;

How can I help you today?

Why Choose Carl Seier
For Your Real Estate Needs?
Whether you are buying or selling your home, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you research the Realtor you choose to help you. For most people, the home they buy or sell is the single largest asset they own. Choosing the right real estate agent should not be taken lightly.
Not all real estate agents are the same. We all have different ways we practice our business. That is why I strongly recommend you interview at least three agents before deciding who you wish to hire to help you buy or sell your home. When we buy a car, we often test drive more than one car. Real estate should be no different. Find the right Realtor that has the business model that is best suited to meet your needs.
One of the things that I pride myself on is having a business model that is not your typical Realtor business model. I don’t base my success on how many homes I have sold in a given period of time. Nor do I base my success on how many real estate awards I have won. In fact, I can honestly say that based on the way I operate my business, I will never win any of the awards that Realtors win in our market place. I spend far too much time with my individual clients to do the type of volume required to win any such awards.
As Realtors we wear two very different hats. One is where we help sellers sell their home. The other is where we help buyers find their new home. The roles we play, and how we help differs greatly.
When I am hired to help someone sell their home I believe I have three responsibilities. First is to help my clients get their homes ready for market. Secondly is to help educate home sellers on the market to ensure the right selling price is chosen. And lastly, is to have a comprehensive marketing plan to ensure the home is seen by as many buyers as possible.
As previously mentioned, chances are your home is your single largest asset. Making sure your home looks its best is vitally important in determining how much your home will sell for. This step is sadly overlooked when many sell their home. A properly prepared home will sell for thousands of dollars more without tons of time or money invested. Most importantly, it will ensure your home stands out from your competition
This is step that I like to roll up my sleeves and get involved with. This is also how I believe I very much differentiate myself as a Realtor. I am in the real estate trenches on a daily basis. I know what appeals to buyers and what doesn’t. This is why I take a very active role in helping my clients make sure their homes stand out.
Along with the clients that hire me, we spend a week or two fixing up their home. This can be painting, decluttering, installing baseboards or anything else that is needed to get your home ready. A great portion of my time is spent with my home sellers painting, caulking, or a hundred other jobs I do to ensure my clients sell their home for the highest possible dollar.
After we have “spruced up” the home, many homes can use a little staging. I carry a wide variety of household goods to help stage your home. From art work to lamps to bedding to you name it. I have two storage lockers full of items that can go in the homes I sell if they require it.
I cannot emphasize enough how critical this step is. I also believe strongly that the agent you hire should take an active role in helping you make sure your home looks its best.
Ensuring your home is priced properly is also an important step in selling your home for the highest possible dollar. I am constantly studying the market. Looking at market trends. Paying attention to interest rates and how they may effect selling your home. My role here is to make sure I provide you with as much information as possible so that you can choose just the right price to list your home at.
I will perform a comprehensive market evaluation. This will show you what similar homes to yours are currently for sale and what homes similar to yours have recently sold for.
This is another very critical step to ensure your home sells in a timely fashion and for the highest possible dollar. Often this is also a step that people don’t pay attention to when hiring a Realtor to sell their home. The marketing plan is what will determine how many potential buyers see your home, and of course that also means how many buyers will come view your home.
The right marketing plan must include much more than just putting up a for sale sign and placing your home on the MLS. This however is the entire marketing plan for many agents. When interviewing agents it is very critical they give you a detailed plan of how they intend to market your home.
I leave no stone unturned when marketing a home. Each and every day I have a home listed I find different ways to expose your home to all potential buyers. In excess of 93% of home buyers now get their information about homes for sale online first. It is critical your home has comprehensive online presence. I create individual web sites for each and every home I list. www.youraddress.com This allows me to upload fifty or sixty pictures of your home for buyers to look at. Exposing your home through social media and all other online avenues. Advertising your home through a wide variety of mediums is also very critical.
All three of these steps take a great deal of time to implement. This is why I never take more than 5 listings at any given time. While many agents will carry 10, 20 or even up to 30 listings at one time; there is no way, based on my marketing plan I have the time to do that. In order to focus on ensuring your home looks its best and gets as much exposure as possible I simply can’t take more than five listings at one time. There are only 24 hours in a day.
The upside to that is that I can confidently say that I will ensure your home sells and sells for the highest possible dollar. As previously mentioned, I will never win a real estate award. Real estate awards are based on the volume of business a Realtor does. My business model is not set up for volume. The one thing I do take pride in however is being able to say that I have sold every home I have listed since 2004. While many agents have several homes they list expire every month, I have sold every home I have listed for 12 years running now.
When it comes to helping buyers I feel my one and only job is to make sure they make an informed buying decision. My goal is to educate the buyers I work with. I do this in two ways:
Buying a home is a huge economic decision. Making the wrong buying decision can have negative economic consequences for you and your family for years to come. I believe one of my roles is to ensure the buyers I work with understand the market place and the value of the homes they are considering.
One of the things I do for buyers is a market evaluation on every home that they might be interested in. A market evaluation looks at similar homes and what they have recently sold for. What better way to learn the value of homes than to see market evaluations on homes that pique your interest. This allows the clients I work with to get a great sense of the value of homes and ensure they make the right economic decisions.
One of the things I take great pride in is having a great working knowledge of the structure and mechanics of a home. I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours learning about homes. Educating myself on all the components of a home. When I show my clients homes, I go through the entire home. Dissecting each part of it.
I go through the heating, electrical, and plumbing systems. I look at the windows, the roof and of course the overall structural integrity of a home. I can let my clients know the condition of each component, how much life they have left and of course the cost to replace anything that needs to be replaced. When I show a home to my clients I feel quite confident they know what they are purchasing.
I don’t comment of any cosmetic attributes of a house. That is a personal choice. You don’t need a Realtor to tell you how wonderful the wall colours are. I do however feel it is my responsibility to inform you as much as possible about the overall condition of a home.
My goal is to ensure my clients make a great investment and know exactly what they are buying.
I hope that gives you a little bit of an insight into how I operate my business. As I previously said, I really think it is important you interview a few agents before you decide who will help you buy or sell your home. I ask that you consider that I am one of the agents you interview.
If you have any questions or would like to interview me I can be reached at (204) 999-6493 or by email at cseier@mts.net

Testimonials
We were so happy that we used Carl to find our home. He was so knowledgeable about the market in the areas that we were interested in and his experience doing home renovations was extremely valuable to us. Carl was able to point out things that most people would overlook when purchasing a house, and he was able to advise on how much it would cost to fix problems or bring it up to code. When we were in a house, he took the time to investigate in every nook and cranny and would educate us on what to look for. Carl was very professional and a pleasure to work with. We very highly recommend him.

Reflection of the Necessaire egg in 1952 exhibition

This Easter Egg was made in the form of a toilet-case. It contains a small 13-piece manicure set. It is one of the twelve untracked Fabergé's Imperial Easter Eggs. It is valued about 3 million dollars. It would be wonderful to find at least some news about this curious "egg" made by Fabergé. The Nécessaire Egg was sold in 1952. The buyer was almost certainly British, and insisted on anonymity.
This egg is known to exist from a photograph from 1902 when it was included in an exhibition in St Petersburg. Gold and gem-studded, it is decorated with diamond-encrusted ribbons of leaves and roses and three large sapphires. Following the 1917 Russian Revolution, it is believed to have been seized by the Bolsheviks and was recorded in a 1922 Soviet inventory.
Art experts suspected it had been lost or destroyed until a Fabergé enthusiast in America discovered an identical image of the egg in an auction catalogue from the 1960s. The image shows the egg among lots being sold in March 1964 by Parke Bernet, the New York auction house that was later acquired by Sotheby's. The vendor was named only as "Clarke", with the egg described as "Gold Watch in Egg-Form Case on Wrought Three-Tone Gold Stand, Set with Jewels".
"The interior is designed as an Etui with thirteen gold and diamond set implements." This is the description of item 20 under the heading 'Lent Anonymously' from the catalogue of a loan exhibition of the works of Carl Fabergé held at Wartski, 138, Regent Street, London W1, November 8-25, 1949.
Faberge Egg
A Fabergé egg is the artifact at the center of The Zanzibar Marketplace Job. In the story, Maggie Collins, Nate's ex-wife, is accused of stealing a highly enameled blue Faberge egg from the Kiev Museum of Art. The team must work with their arch-nemesis, James Sterling, to rescue Maggie and return the egg to the museum.
Fabergé Eggs Edit
So named because they were crafted by the House of Fabergé in St. Petersburg, Fabergé eggs are highly valued artworks made in two sizes: large eggs typically made as Easter gifts for the members of the House of Romanov, the Russian royal family, and small charm-sized eggs, either enameled or made of hardstone, which could be worn singly or in groups. Although strongly associated with the Russian royal family, Fabergé made a small number of eggs for other private clients, including Consuelo Vanderbilt, the Duchess of Marlborough.
Large Eggs Edit
The practice of giving eggs at Easter, representing rebirth and new life, is a long-standing tradition in the Russian Orthodox Church. Russian families often paint highly colored chicken eggs, which are exchanged with family members. Among the Russian royal family, more elaborate jeweled or enameled eggs made by the court jewelers were exchanged. The tradition of giving Fabergé eggs as gifts began with Tzar Alexander III, and continued with his son, Tzar Nicholas II, who gave some of the most extravagant of Fabergé's eggs to his wife, the Tzarina Alexandra Fedorovna.
The Rose Trellis Egg, House of Faberge (1907)
An example of these eggs is the Rose Trellis Egg. Made principally of turned metal covered with guilloche enamel, rose cut diamonds, enameled roses and gold, it was presented to the Tzarina on Easter, 1907, celebrating the birth of the Tzarevich Alexi Nicholaievich, born three years previously during the Franco-Prussian War. Unlike many royals of the time, Nicholas and Alexandra married for love, and had a close, if extravagant, family life with their five children. The eggs were a rich example of Nicholas' affection for his wife. Faberge eggs traditionally opened to reveal a rich lining of enamel or fabric, and a small gift; the Rose Trellis egg contained diamond necklace with a framed miniature of the Tzarevich, now lost.
To the Russian royals, these gifts were symbols of love and held strong religious significance. But to the Bolsheviks, whose revolution would result in the deaths of the Russian royal family a few years later, they symbolized the excesses of the Russian aristocracy. Despite the Bolsheviks efforts to eradicate all traces of the aristocracy, 42 of the 50 eggs known to have been made survive, along with designs for four more for Easter 1917. Many of them are in American and European museums, or in private collections. Should one come on the market, its value would easily exceed $1 million.
Small Egg Charms Edit
Faberge egg mini-dove (made of sodalite, circa 1903)
The Houses of Fabergé produced hundreds of small egg charms, given as Easter gifts by the Russian aristocracy. The charms were fashioned from enameled metal, often set with stones and trimmed in gold. Other eggs were crafted from hardstone such as cinnabar, sodalite, malachite or lapis lazuli, frequently in the form of whimsical animals suggesting the shape of an egg. One of the largest collections of these small eggs was that of Queen Marie of Romania (born Princess Marie of Edinburgh, daughter of Grand Duchess Maria Alexandra of Russia), now on display at the Maryhill Museum, near Portland, Oregon.
The House of Fabergé Edit
The House of Fabergé was founded in St. Petersburg, Russia's imperial city, by Gustav Fabergé. Opened in 1842, the shop was a fashionable jewelers and manufacturer of luxury goods, providing one-of-a-kind pieces to the Russian aristocracy. Although Gustav was Russian, he added an accent to his last name in an effort to make it appear more French at a time when French was the language of the Russian court.
Ownership of the firm passed to Gustav's son, Peter Carl in 1882. It was under Carl's stewardship that the firm created many of the Faberge eggs purchased by the Russian royal family. A master goldsmith, Carl's work restoring items in the Hermitage museum brought him to the attention of Tzar Alexander III. The House of Fabergé received its first commission for an Imperial Easter egg in 1885, along with an appointment as Goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown.

By 1887, Carl was given complete freedom of design and began to create increasingly elaborate eggs. In addition to the eggs, The House of Fabergé created small hardstone animal sculptures, many of which are in the collection of Queen Elizabeth II as well as pieces fashioned to resemble small vases of flowers. These pieces were sought after not only by the Russian aristocracy, but all over Europe, and by wealthy Americans such as Marjorie Merriweather Post.
In addition to the eggs and hardstone animals, the House of Fabergé sold a complete line of enameled and jeweled luxury items, including picture frames, cigarette cases, clocks, desk sets, dresser sets and other small items used by wealthy men and women of the day. They also manufactured an extensive line of jewelry, notably small pins resembling real flowers.
The firm also branched out, opening shops in Moscow and London; Carl's sons later opened a shop in Paris as a direct competitor to Cartier Jewelers. The company was nationalized by the Bolsheviks in 1918, and the Faberge family were forced to flee to safety in Finland, never to return to Russia. The last branch of the firm, in Paris, closed in 2001.

- We use cookies to improve your experience on our websites and for functionality purposes, for example, if you choose to buy any of our products, we place a cookie on your computer to remember the currency that you have selected so next time you visit our website we can display the correct currency to you;
- We also use cookies to understand your usage of our website;
- Most web browsers (Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.) are configured to automatically accept cookies. However, most web browsers allow some control of most cookies through the browser settings, including the disabling of cookies at any time, etc.

Hamburg, you got me.
You know that feeling you get when you see a great movie that you didn’t know anything about prior to watching it? Every scene, character and plot twist are introduced to your surprise and you never quite know where it’s going, but your imagination tries to fill it in along the way.
That’s kind of how I felt about Hamburg.
My parents had flown in for a visit and I wanted to show them something new. I’d had the port city on my mind for over a year and since neither of them had been before either, it was settled! We hit the road Saturday morning – Mom and Dad in the back with a bottle of bubbly and my husband and I at the wheel. #GriswoldFamilyVacation
We zipped up the Autobahn enthusiastically, ignoring all warnings on the radio about the storm that was brewing in the Baltic Sea. What’s a little rain to us Nova Scotians anyway?
We arrived on Saturday afternoon and checked into our apartment rental right away. It was super spacious and absolutely adorable. The old wooden floors, large windows and crown mouldings were stunning – I could have moved right in!
Thanks again Hamburg Homes for the sweet hook-up while we were in town!
Now, as you probably know, Hamburg isn’t exactly surrounded by rolling vineyards and wineries. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a prime location for a wine-lover like me to want to hang around. The city has a TON to offer if you’re feeling parched or peckish, and we had a pretty decent set of arrangements lined up!
On our first evening we hit up Vlet in der Speicherstadt which is located in the HafenCity district on the canals. ‘Speicherstadt’ is German for ‘warehouse district’ and Hamburg’s just happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site and is absolutely breathtaking – especially in the evening. A must-see for all you Restoration Hardware loft-loving design fanatics.
We hailed a cab just in time to beat the rain, which was hammering down horizontally by the time we arrived to our reservation.
After a fantastic dinner and the best freakin’ beef tartare I’ve ever tasted we called it a night. We had plans to wake up at 5am the next day to visit Hamburg’s famous fish market and were told to be there early in-order to get the full experience.
To be honest, I wasn’t convinced a single one of us would be surrendering to our alarm clocks the next morning – Especially not after the cocktails, bottles of wine and round of nightcaps that the manager kindly rolled over on the digestif trolly. But! Like my Dad has always said, “those who want to drink with the boys at night, have to get up with men in the morning”. So, at 5 o’clock sharp, off went the alarm and up we all jumped.
We headed out into the darkness trying our very best to ignore the fact that we had all so willingly sacrificed our Sunday morning beauty sleep for a pile of dead fish we knew we weren’t going to buy anyway. It was a quiet drive but we were there in no time. We parked along the water next to the boardwalk and headed towards the market. As we approached we started to notice that something wasn’t quite right. It seemed as though the majority of the dock walkways and bridges were underwater… and a park bench and a lamp post, and… ahhh, the main market building itself. Wonderful.
I guess the only fish there that morning were still swimming, because the entire lower street was flooded and the tide wasn’t even all the way in yet. News-crews were on-site to cover the story and the city water control had just arrived to close the flood gates. Hm. Apparently there had been a storm in Hamburg! Clearly we had just slept right through it. #whoknew
So how do you make the best of a dark Sunday morning in Hamburg? Turns out we didn’t have to get too creative, because directly across from the market on the only piece of dry sidewalk left in sight was a pub called Eier Carl, and it was bumpin’!
Walking in sober you had to adjust to the smell of flourishing hangovers and beer breath fast, or you wouldn’t last. The trick, we figured, was to get your own beer as quickly as possible, join in on the drunken festivities and admit that you do absolutely fit in there – no matter what the time of day. Because, as much as you try to tell yourself that you’ve never been the one up there, arm-in-arm, belting out songs you think you know the words to, with a keyboard player who calls himself Izzy, or Iggy, or whatever it was, and is dressed as a sailor, let’s face it luv… you have.
So there we were, drinking our beers and taking in the moment, when suddenly Iggy (…or was it Ziggy?) stopped singing to make an announcement. The water outside was getting higher and the plumbing in the bar had stopped working. The water was almost up to the door and he said we would probably be stuck in there for a couple of hours if we didn’t leave right away. Regardless, and to our astonishment, ol’Iggster invited everyone to stay and continue to drink! We took another look around at the enthusiastically swaying crowd and darted for the door! #CYA
Back outside we began trying to work out how we could get around all the water and back to the car. It was around then that we looked at one-another, faces suddenly pale, before the first signalled towards the rising water on the street behind us and asked sheepishly “Isn’t that the street where we parked the car?”
If you had seen how quickly we cleared out of the Eier Carl when we heard about the bathroom situation, you would have been impressed to see that we could move even faster. I should tell you though, and I do hate to burst the bubble, the car was not underwater when we got to it. Turns out they had closed the flood gate on that side in plenty of time – boringgg. So, we carried on with our Sight-Seeing-Sunday.
We had breakfast in the red-light district in St. Pauli, did the stereotypical tourist round on one of those hop-on hop-off buses, took a boat cruise around the harbour and then caught a late lunch at Coast by East where we enjoyed a bottle of Robert Weil Riesling before heading back to our flat in the Sternschanze district.
Now, even-though we had carted an overly ambitious amount of wine with us from home, it was still great to know that we were staying around the corner from a restaurant with one of the city’s best wine lists, Witwenball.
You know, just in case.
We stopped in to check it out on Sunday evening for an appetiser and a bottle of Von Buhl Riesling Sekt. The owners Axel and Julia have done an incredible job. The place is beautiful and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. With floor to ceiling shelves stocked with an impressive selection of wines and an equally tempting dinner menu, it isn’t hard to see how they scored a 96 point Falstaff rating.
If you haven’t tasted Von Buhl’s famous Sekt before, I urge you to track some down. Especially since Mathieu Kauffmann – former Chef de Cave at Bollinger has taken over the cellar master position at the prestigious Pfalz winery.
Monday was our last full day in the city and we headed back towards the water for our lunch reservation at German celebrity chef, Steffen Henssler’s sushi restaurant, Henssler Henssler.
After a couple bottles of Sancerre, about a ton of sushi and a boat full of assorted desserts we were on our way, and good God… I’m still thinking about the food today.
It was sushi heaven.
During lunch (sometime around the end of the second bottle of wine) I booked us in for an ‘Evening Lights Canal Tour’ for that night. We rolled out of Henssler Henssler, bundled up in our warmest clothing and headed for the pier in search of our lovely bateau. When we arrived, to our surprise, we were pointed towards the exact same boat we had been on the day before, and it would in no lifetime, ever, be fitting into the city canals like we had imagined. I had obviously booked the wrong boat.
Sancerre 1: Jana: 0
The bartender onboard definitely recognised us from the day before – I assume they don’t get too many repeat visitors over the span of a weekend. We made the best of my screw-up and drank our share of the bar dry as we watched the fully-lit Queen Mary II sail off into the darkness from the upper deck. Hamburg is as pretty by night as it is by day, especially since the completion of the Elbphilharmonie, which stands gloriously at the rivers edge. It may not have been the night we planned, but it was still a perfect ending to our stay.
I will definitely be back.
Huge thanks to HamburgHomes, Natalie and Steffen at Henssler Henssler, Julia & Axel at Witwenball, Florian at Vlet and most of all, to my incredible parents for making the journey from LA (through NINE timezones) to spend the week with us. ❤
